Together on the Journey:
A Weekly Blog

I’ve always been someone who meanders. It’s one of my favourite ways to relax and spend time on my own. The technical definition of meandering is ‘following a winding course’, but in reality, the course does not need to be winding; any path that you are following will do.

One of my favourite places to meander in is High Park, an urban oasis just a short walk from my house. The park is full of different places that pair well with what I’m looking for in a meander. Sometimes I walk through the woods and forget I am in downtown Toronto; I listen to the wind and the birds and breathe deeply. Sometimes I walk through the zoo, passing by flashy peacocks and fuzzy highland cows and I feel like a kid again. But one of my favourite places to meander is in the labyrinth.

If you walk to about the middle of High Park to the restaurant, walk through the parking lot, and head north along a well-beaten path into the woods, you will stumble across a labyrinth, an ancient meditation tool that enables you to walk and meditate without having to worry where you are going. The path will guide you in and the path will guide you out.

People walk the labyrinth in different ways. Some walk fast and others slow. Some pray, some chant a mantra, some meditate, and some do nothing in particular. All ways are right and good.

Next Sunday, October 26, I will be leading a special church service called Church in the Park, where I will walk people into the labyrinth, open the service in prayer, and then send them out for a time of meandering. Some may choose to walk the labyrinth, or wander through the woods, or the zoo, or down by the lake. Then, I will bring us back together to share our experiences, celebrate the Eucharist, and then break bread together. You are welcome to join us! Come and experience your own meander.
