Music Ministry

Music holds a special place in our worship at St. George’s-on-the-Hill. Youth participation is very important for us. Our worship is often enhanced by young talented musicians and instrumentalists. The chancel choir, under the direction of Ran Kim, our organist and pianist, leads us in the singing of hymns and provides choral music from September to June during the weekly celebrations. We look forward to presenting a beautiful variety of musical styles in the coming year, as music is one way we connect with God and experience community with each other.

Singing God’s love-song with harmony, faith, and compassion

Sunday Chancel Choir

Our choir is a congenial mix of extremely capable volunteers and professional singers committed to attaining a consistent level of singing for worship.  Our director of music Ran and the choir always welcome new members.

We rehearse on Thursday evenings from 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm, for the liturgy on Sunday at 10:30 am.

Please feel free to reach out and send an email to: rankim@nullstgeorgesonthehill.ca

Concert Series

Professional musicians present uplifting, soul-feeding concerts twice a year and raise funds for outreach programs like the Daily Food Bank. These online streaming events can be viewed on our website at any time.  Go to our Concert Series page to learn more about previous events.

Please check for future dates for our concerts at www.stgeorgesonthehill.ca or on our Facebook page.

The Organ & Piano

The organ was built in 1973, Op. 3175. Originally built and designed as a Tracker action, it was altered and installed as an Electric Pneumatic action (which most pipe organs are), due to a structural impediment in the roof.  In 2015, the organ was dismantled, cleaned, tuned, the metal screens were removed, and a new oboe stop installed, work that has greatly enhanced the tonal colour and volume of the organ.

The piano is a Heintzman Grand Op. H 61.

Wednesday Church by Candlelight Chamber Choir

The music sung at this celebration ranges from Gregorian and Anglican Chant, to polyphonic motets and Mass settings by composers such as Palestrina, Victoria, Byrd, Tallis, Willan, and Bruckner.  The music is very soothing, sacred, never performed, in keeping with the beauty of the service’s candlelight.

Mark Wood-Salomon (tenor) is the Director of the Candlelight Chamber Choir, along with gifted singers:  Margaret Cormier (soprano), Katherine Jones (alto), Adrian Autencio (baritone), and Bill Jones (bass).

The choir also features Jennifer McCallum (soprano), Marion Newman (alto), Jimmy Martins (tenor), Michael P. Taylor (tenor), and Martin Gomes (bass) on annual services such the All Souls Day/Samhain service, and our Hebrew-themed music night in partnership with Holy Blossom Temple.

The First Sunday after Christmas

A Christmas Prayer
O Holy One,
heavenly angels spoke to earthly shepherds
and eternity entered time in the child of Bethlehem.
Through the telling of the Christmas story,
let our temporal lives be caught up in the eternal
in that same child,
that we might join shepherds and all the heavenly host
in praising the coming of Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen.

Please join us right here online, this Sunday at 10:30am as we celebrate the First Sunday after Christmas with Fr. Michelle Childs-Ward and Jessica Dowling, accompanied by the choir and Music Director Ran Kim.
