Together on the Journey:
A Weekly Blog

It is likely not a secret that December is a busy time for those in ministry. There is just so much that needs to be done. There are sermons to prepare, liturgies to plan, letters to write, and phone calls to make. As much as advent calls us to be patient, to slow down, and to wait, this is very difficult to live out and often conflicts with the reality of ministry in December.

And then you get sick.

You may have noticed on Sunday that I was wearing a mask. That’s because I’ve come down with a nasty cold. Not that surprising considering I have a kiddo in daycare who brings home every germ under the sun.

So for the last few days, I’ve been home trying to rest, and I’ve been leaning into those advent practices of watching and waiting. I’ve been able to read some Advent reflections and spend some time in prayer. Overall, I’ve been able to feel more grounded in the season and able to concentrate more on the coming mystery. And my cat and I have both enjoyed the extra cuddle time!

And the good news is that you don’t need to wait for illness to remember to pause! There are many resources out there that can help you with your prayers during Advent, some of which will even deliver a Bible reading and reflection to your inbox everyday. Here are a few of my favourites:

Sisterhood of St John the Divine (SSJD) | Advent Reflections

Alongside Hope (formerly PWRDF) | The Advent of Healing
