Music Ministry

Music holds a special place in our worship at St. George’s-on-the-Hill. Our talented choir leads us in singing hymns and other music. The repertoire sung in English and Latin reflects a broad perspective of music from the 1500’s to the present.  Other special masses, such as the Marian Mass by W.A. Mozart, and the St. Theresa Mass by J. Haydn, are sung to mark important celebrations in the church year. Occasionally, worship is enhanced by guest instrumentalists.  We look forward to presenting more new, beautiful and challenging music in the coming year, as the music is a reflection of the worshipful nature of the weekly celebrations.

Singing God’s love-song with harmony, faith, and compassion

Sunday Choir

Our choir is a congenial mix of extremely capable volunteers and professional singers committed to attaining a consistent level of singing for the worship.

The Organ

The organ was built in 1973, Op. 3175. Originally built and designed as a Tracker action, it was altered and installed as an Electric Pneumatic action (which most pipe organs are), due to a structural impediment in the roof.  In 2015, the organ was dismantled, cleaned, tuned, the metal screens were removed, and a new oboe stop installed, work that has greatly enhanced the tonal colour and volume of the organ.

The piano is a Heintzman Grand Op. H 61.

Wednesday Church by Candlelight Chamber Choir

The music sung at this celebration ranges from Gregorian and Anglican Chant, to polyphonic motets and Mass settings by composers such as Palestrina, Victoria, Byrd, Tallis, Willan, and Bruckner.  The music is very soothing, sacred, never performed, in keeping with the beauty of the service’s candlelight.

Mark Wood-Salomon (tenor) is the Director of the Candlelight Chamber Choir, along with gifted singers:  Kendra Fredette (soprano), Katherine Jones (alto), Dan Cantiller (baritone), and Bill Jones (bass).

The choir also features additional voices on annual services such the All Souls Day/Samhain service, and our Hebrew-themed music night in partnership with Holy Blossom Temple.

Organist Emeritus – Karen Rymal

Educated in Canada and the USA, Ms. Rymal is well-known as an organ recitalist, accompanist and teacher of piano and voice.  She is a member of the piano/voice faculty of the Music Department at York University (including the Course Director of 1000, 1001, and 1086) and was the organist/choir director at St. George’s on-the-Hill until 2018.

The Day of Pentecost

A Prayer for the Week
Perplexing, Pentecostal God,
you infuse us with your Spirit,
urging us to vision and dream.
May the gift of your presence
find voice in our lives,
that our babbling may be transformed into discernment
and the flickering of many tongues
light an unquenchable fire of compassion and justice. Amen.

Please join us online this Sunday at 10:30 a.m. as we celebrate The Day of Pentecost with the Rev'd Jess Dowling, Fr Andrew Sheldon, the chancel choir, and guest organist Max Marechaux.
